First words\u2014regardless of the language\u2014usually appear between the 9th and 12th month, with more intensive speech development occurring between 10\u201314 months.<\/p>\n<p>In practice, this means:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Around the first birthday<\/strong>: The child says 1\u20133 simple words.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Between 12 and 18 months<\/strong>: Vocabulary can grow to about a dozen words (combined from both languages).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Remember<\/strong>: The child&#8217;s entire vocabulary counts\u2014regardless of which language the words belong to.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"do-children-mix-languages\">Do children mix languages?<\/h2>\n<p>Yes\u2014and that\u2019s great news. This phenomenon is called <strong>code-switching<\/strong>. It is not a mistake, but a clever communication strategy. Do not pressure them.
